Mission & Outreach

The Outreach Division seeks to encourage the members of our congregation to participate in projects which serve the needs of the community.  The Division supports a variety of service opportunities and is charged with making those opportunities known to the congregation.  We believe strongly that service demonstrates the second great commandment: to love others as ourselves.

Mission Trips

Each summer the Outreach Division sponsors a mission trip to locations that have suffered from natural disasters or to areas where help with special projects can enhance the lives of others.  In 2007 and 2008 Tuckahoe sent teams to the Gulf coast to help with rebuilding.  In 2009 Tuckahoe’s mission trip was working in partnership with “Boaz and Ruth” in the Highland Park area of Richmond (see the video below shot by Boaz and Ruth).  In the summer of 2010 Tuckahoe worked with Appalachia Service Project in Mullens, West Virginia.  In the summer of 2011, we are planning a trip to the Dominican Republic.  For more information, contact Steve Kramer.

Oak Grove-Bellemeade

In 2005 Tuckahoe became involved with Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary School in Richmond city.  Members of our congregation volunteer their time as tutors and classroom assistants and also help with special projects honoring the teachers and students during the school year.  For more information, contact Dick Mateer.

CARITAS

For many years Tuckahoe has participated in the CARITAS program providing shelter for the homeless in the Richmond area.  The week after Thanksgiving Tuckahoe becomes home to families who find themselves in need of shelter.  For more information, contact Dick Mateer.

Habitat for Humanity

Every other year Tuckahoe joins with other Presbyterian churches in the area and helps build and fund a house through Habitat for Humanity.  The last year Tuckahoe worked with Habitat for Humanity was 2010.

Other Outreach Activities of Tuckahoe

In addition to the above projects, members of Tuckahoe also prepare and take meals once a month to the Men’s Emergency Shelter, Freedom House, and Hilliard House.  Individuals drive for Meals on Wheels, contribute to Lamb’s Basket (a food bank), provide back packs for children taken into foster care, and take part in mission projects sponsored by Presbyterian Women.  Members also participate in YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program and provide Christmas gifts through Samaritan’s Purse and Angel Tree.  For more information about any of these programs, contact Pam Burch

Tuckahoe supports the following organizations financially through its Community Ministries program:  A Grace Place, Boaz and Ruth, Camp Hanover, CAPUP, CARITAS, Central Virginia Food Bank, Crossover Health, Daily Planet, Daughters of Zelophehad, Hilliard House, Home Again, Hospital Hospitality House, Interfaith Services of Henrico (ISH), Lamb’s Basket, Meals on Wheels, YMCA Bright Beginnings, and YWCA Women’s Advocacy.
